In memory of Jack Friedman - Elias Pater
Jack Friedman ( Elias Pater) was a cousin (my mother Miriam Freedman's first cousin). I visited him at Stella Maris in Haifa on a number of occasions,the first time I met him was in 1987. I always enjoyed my long philosophical conversations with him, in the quietness of his spartan rooms. His library still remains, his books placed on the shelves as he left them.

At the time I was visiting Elias, I was a yeshivah student near Jerusalem. Before he passed away, Elias gave me copies of many of his poems - some published, many never before published, old photostats on fragile newsprint, with notes on them in his handwriting, and blots of correction fluid. I always wanted to do something with them. He had recorded some of his poems for me on a cassette tape on one occasion - but to my regret, I can no longer find it, though I still remember the distinctive sound of his voice. I still have all the papers he gave me, and from time to time, I will read from them here, and so build up a collection of his poems online, as a memorial to him.

Elias Friedman
March 11 1916: Born in Cape Town, South Africa
1940: Volunteered as a doctor in the South African Medical Corp
August 5, 1943: Baptised
June 29 1953: Ordained to the priesthood, Cathedral of Avignon, France
September 7 1954: Arrived at Mt. Carmel, Haifa as Carmelite friar
June 11 1999: Passed away.
Elias Friedman, OCD, a Carmelite priest, lived at Stella Maris Monastery on Mount Carmel in Haifa, Israel until he passed over in 1999. Born in 1916 into a Lithuanian Jewish family in Cape Town,South Africa. Jacob Friedman graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1938. In 1943, while serving as a doctor in the South African Medical Corps, he entered the Catholic Church. Four years later, he became a Carmelite. He was ordained in 1953 and entered Stella Maris the following year.
